dE is demo mode, not a breakdown. KitchenAid describes a Booster-key press within a minute of connecting power.
Model compatibility: KitchenAid reuses codes across series and model years, so dE may mean something different on another appliance or generation. Confirm this against your model’s documentation and record your full model number before acting.
Plain language
What this code means
Demo mode is on, so the cooktop does not switch heat up and its functions do not come on.
Nothing is broken
A dE on the display of a switched-off cooktop (the manufacturer’s pages write it “d E”) tells you Demo mode is active. While it is, the cooktop will not raise heat and none of its functions start, and nothing else is wrong. The manufacturer describes the same thing as the cooktop not stepping heat up, with its functions staying off.
How to change it
The electric and induction help pages carry the same method in slightly different wording. Briefly:
Hook the cooktop up to its power supply.
During the minute that follows, press the quick-heat key marked “Booster”, found on the keypad at bottom left, and keep it down for 5 seconds.
Caveats about the instruction
A picture on the pages shows the key. The picture does not reach the text.
One page, the induction one, describes the press as toggling Demo Mode; the electric page instead says it switches the acoustic signal.
Because the two disagree, do not count on the press doing one particular thing. Confirm in your use-and-care guide.
The press belongs inside the first minute after power is connected, and the text names no other way to change the mode.
