E12 is the gas sensor code with firmer wording than E11. KitchenAid lists a breaker reset and then service.
Model compatibility: KitchenAid reuses codes across series and model years, so E12 may mean something different on another appliance or generation. Confirm this against your model’s documentation and record your full model number before acting.
Plain language
What this code means
KitchenAid reports a problem with the gas sensor or the associated wiring.
Gas sensor, second code
KitchenAid over-the-range microwaves have two gas sensor codes, E11 and E12. E11 describes a sensor that reported a problem to the control board. E12 is blunter: there is a problem with the gas sensor or the wiring that goes with it.
The reset
Switch off the breaker(s) serving the microwave and wait one minute.
Switch the breaker(s) on.
Watch the microwave for one minute and check that the code stays off the display.
Check the microwave operates.
E12 against E11
Both entries give the same causes, the gas sensor and its wiring. Only the wording differs, since E12 has no “possible.” KitchenAid does not rank one as worse than the other, and neither do we.
When E12 will not go away
The help page closes by telling you to call or schedule service. A sensor and its wiring are not parts for an owner to open. Microwaves store energy in high-voltage components, so the housing should stay shut.
