KitchenAid Refrigerator H2O Code (H20): Water Filter Light

People often type it as H20, but the light is H2O, and on a KitchenAid refrigerator it does not signal a breakdown. It reports water filter status and turns on when the filter wants attention.

Replacement timing

• KitchenAid advises a fresh water filter about twice a year, when the indicator lights, or whenever needed. Usage and the quality of your water may call for earlier changes.
• In the side by side article the guidance is to change it when the status light is red or when water flow or ice output falls, and at minimum every six months.
• Where no indicator exists, the full-size help text sets the outer limit at six to nine months.

Reset procedure

The light stays on until you reset it, and the reset comes after the new filter is installed.

1. Hold the LIGHT and ICE TYPE buttons at once.
2. Keep them pressed for three seconds.
3. When the reset is complete, the status light goes off.

Effects of a clogged filter

A filter that is clogged, or fitted badly, can restrict the supply reaching the ice maker and the dispenser. KitchenAid names smaller ice cubes, reduced ice production and slower dispensing. With a clogged filter and no replacement available, the manufacturer says you may use the refrigerator without one. Removing it puts the water system into bypass mode and water keeps flowing, unfiltered until a new filter is installed.

One minor note

KitchenAid calls a drop or two of water after dispensing normal. Keeping the glass in place for a couple of seconds beyond releasing the button may also be needed.
